Ammann

Swiss tradition since 1869

Ammann Group Holding AG is a globally active construction machinery manufacturer headquartered in Langenthal in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. The company was founded in 1869 by Jakob Ammann, who gave the company its name, as a small workshop and is still owned by the fifth and sixth generations of the Ammann family. Jakob Ammann was an engineer and inventor. In 1911 he developed a motor road roller. A first larger production facility was soon built in Madiswil. In 1931 Jakob Ammann ventured his first steps abroad and was soon able to sign a contract for the exclusive representation of Caterpillar, the world’s largest construction machinery manufacturer from Illinois in the USA, for Switzerland. This contract with Caterpillar ultimately made Ammann big.

Steady growth with a focus on road construction

In 1984, the Swiss company took over the bankruptcy estate of the Alfelder Eisenwerke in Alfeld an der Leine in Lower Saxony. A second administrative headquarters is now located here and Ammann still produces asphalt mixing plants to this day. The German companies Duomat, a manufacturer of compaction equipment, and Rammax, a manufacturer of trench rollers, were also bought by Amman. In addition, a joint venture with the Japanese engineering company Yanmar was established in 1989 to manufacture compact excavators in France. Since 2005, Ammann Group Holding AG has had a new site in Shanghai, where asphalt machines are produced. Also in 2005, Amman was able to take over the engineering group Stavostroj in the Czech Republic, which produces tandem rollers for the company.
